How I got here

I grew up in Portland and lived across the river in Vancouver, Washington for a few years as an adult. I’ve always been drawn to technology. I worked a few different jobs while I was in college, including driving for the post office, and after I finished my computer science degree at Portland State I enrolled at Epicodus, a coding school in Portland, to get hands-on back-end training.

Then I took an internship at a web design company in Oregon City, and that’s where I fell for design. Treating a website like a digital canvas, one that has to fit a specific business and still work properly underneath, became the part of the job I care about most.

The back-end training paid off in a different way. It taught me to break a problem down until it makes sense, and that habit is what moved me up at most of my jobs. At The OMC Group in Vancouver I started as a WordPress developer and ended up leading the web team. At Goldstar ATM in Oregon City I started as a web designer, and now I run the websites, ads, SEO and marketing for Goldstar and its sister brands.

In between, I worked at inSupply Labs, a Portland startup, building brands from the ground up with a small group of creatives. We had free rein on those projects, which meant we got to be really creative, and that’s what pushed me into freelancing.

On the side, I manage Google Maps listings and local search for a nightlife company with locations across the US. I live in Lents now, in southeast Portland, a few blocks from one of my favorite projects, The Common Loon.
